During the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, Lakely performed as one of the principal shooters in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. After the exposition, he traveled for a year with "Wild Bill" Cody. To the delight of his sons and other boys in town, Lakely often amused and awed them by shooting holes through coins and ashes from cigarettes as people walked down the street. He could also light matches using a bullet. Mothers must have been horrified! As a young man, Lakely had traveled to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The tales of his harrowing adventures on that journey entertained many in the town for years. He worked at the canning factory and owned a bicycle shop. With two others, he owned a secondhand Stanley Steamer, the first car in town. He played on the town baseball team, was a member of the Eden Cornet Band and the Eden Conservation Society, and was a charter member of the Eden Volunteer Fire Company.
