Bertram Henry Butler
Biography
Bertram Henry Butler was born on 28 December 1892 in Alberton, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He and
Agnes Beveridge Allan were married on 13 July 1927 in Methodist Church, Dampier Street, Bruce Rock, Western Australia, Australia. He died on 5 August 1989, at age 96, in Warwick Lodge Nursing Home, Warwick, Western Australia, Australia.
Bert spent his childhood growing up in Alberton and Queenstown. He was educated at the Alberton State School in Queenstown. After leaving school he started a apprenticeship as a Carpenter and Joiner.
In 1912 following the departure of his parents and some of his siblings to Western Australia, he went to live with eldest brother Harry and his wife Eva in Hendon, South Australia for the next three years until he completed his apprenticeship.
In April 1915 he left Adelaide to make a new life in Western Australia. After his arrival in Bruce Rock he lived with parents in their first home on Walter's block. Sometime after his arrival he commenced the task of building a weather board home for his parents on their block, which he completed just before christmas that year. During the next few years he built a number of buildings in the district including a new shed for Walter.
Sometime around 1916 Bert took over locations 18160 and 16282?? which were situated on the corner of Bruce Rock/Narembeen and Negri Roads. Originally this block had been registered by his father in his brothers name on 11 Dec 1912. However Frank did not take up the option and then he left to fight in World War One. It was eventually registered in Bert's name on 25 July 1925, by which time he had cleared most of it for farming. Over these years he had worked as lumper on the many of the wheat stacks in the district and then in his spare time he gradually cleared his block with just an axe. Although he was only a man of average height and weight there was no one who could match him for strength and endurance when it came to lumping bags of wheat.
On 22 October 1919 he married Lillian May Plant in the Totadgin Hall, situated on the corner of Belka East Road and Totadgin Hall Road. Lillian was born in Broken Hill in New south Wales on 26 August 1898, the daughter of William George Plant and Alice Symmons Clift. Sadly Lily died on 10 October 1924 due to tuberculosis in the Northam Hospital aged 26 years. They had two children Clift born and died 1921 and Betty 1923.
On 27 July 1927 Bert married Agnes Beveridge Allan in the Methodist Church in Bruce Rock. Agnes was born in Perth in Scotland on 3 April 1901, the daughter of Thomas Beveridge Allan and Jessie McLagan Campbell Crawford from the village of Kingskettle. Agnes and her brothers James and Robert left London on board the ship "Bendigo" on 17 December 1925 and arrived in Australia in January 1926. Agnes was working at the hospital when she met Bert. They had three sons: David 1928, Mervyn 1930 and Allan 1941.
Over the next eight years Bert continued to work the farm. He also ran a small dairy on the farm, each morning he would go into town selling the milk dressed in his uniform. Due to the depression, poor seasons and health problems that Agnes suffered mainly due to the heat they left the farm in May 1935. Bert leased the farm to the Negri family and then eventually sold it to them on 30 July 1946.
After moving to Perth they bought a Deli in Victoria Avenue in Clarmont which they operated for only eighteen months before selling it. They then moved to Rock Road in Claremont for some six months, then went to Ord Street in the same suburb before finally moving to Garden Street in Swanbourne. Bert worked as a carpenter for some years before he obtained a position as a Orderly at Sunset Home, an aged mens home in Nedlands.
In 1951 Bert (also sons David and Allan) decided to go farming again, he purchased a run down farm near the Warren River on Grays Road, not far from the timber mill town of Quinninup, in the Manjimup district. He ran a dairy herd, however he was only allowed to sell the cream, the milk was used to feed the pigs that he bred. Their son David bought the farm across the road.
In 1960 they sold the farm and retired to the Perth suburb of Daglish, where he spent a great deal of time in the garden attending to his wonderful display of flowers.
In his younger days his sporting ability lay mainly with football. As a young man in South Australia he played for Alberton United and then later he played for Glanville. After moving to Western Australia he played for Bruce Rock for many years including the 1922? Premiership team, of which, his brother Edwin was also a member. He was also an accomplished boxer, he taught boxing to the young men in the district.
Following a heart attack in 1967 they moved into a unit in St. Leonards Street and later to 14 Fairlight Street Cottesloe. On 26 Jun 1981 Agnes died of cancer in the King Edward Memorial Hospital aged 80 years. Bert remained living in the unit until 1987 when he moved into the Warwick Nursing Home where he died on 5 August 1989 and his cremation took place at the Karrakatta Crematorium on 8 August 1989.
