Harry Field

Biography

Harry Field was born on 21 June 1872 in Frant, Sussex, EnglandO.1,2,3,1,4,5 He and Clara Jane Upton were married on 18 May 1895 in St Andrew's Church, Holborn, Middlesex, England.2 He died on 13 July 1941, at age 69, in Frant, Sussex, EnglandO. He was buried in St Albans Church, Frant, Sussex, England.
Harry Field was a blacksmith and builder. Harry Field, whose family had lived in Frant since 1617 and whose ancestors had been blacksmiths before him. The forge was on the corner of the Green opposite the Post Office, with a forge-pond beside it, but Harry Field became an enterprising builder and pulled down the old cottage, moving across the road himself before building Manorside on the site. He was not the first of his family to combine building and blacksmithing, for the vestry records reveal that the church steeple was being repaired by Robert Field in 1756. Harry was ambitious though, and wanted to do more than just carry out a few repairs. As well as developing his own site, he also built serveral other houses, mainly along the Wadhurst road. While Edward VIII reigned as King he often came to Eridge Castle, and one of the men invited there specifically to gamble with the monarch (and preferably lose), was the South African millionaire, Bernato. Bernato met Field and was taken by his enterprise, so when he married, he invited Field to go to Scotland and build him a hunting box there, which was probably the first house in Britain to have six bathrooms! But when the new Mrs Bernato saw it, she refused to live there, not because of Harry Field's workmanship but because she could not face the cold and wet. So Bernato paid Field, the Frant blacksmith, to go all the way to South Africa and build him a house there. It would be amusing to know whether it still stands. - "Frant - The Story of a Wealden Parish" by Patricia Wright. Published 1982. Page 83 paragraph 2.
