Norway Murders

In the spring of 1999, the Orderud family was already living under a cloud of fear. The previous summer, explosives had been discovered under Anne Orderud Paust’s car, and a month later a gasoline‑soaked propane tank was found outside her apartment — both clear attempts on her life. No one was charged, but the incidents drew national attention and cast suspicion on those close to the family.

On the night of 22 May 1999, an assailant entered the Orderud kårbolig and shot Anne and her elderly parents multiple times with two different weapons. The brutality of the scene shocked investigators: Kristian and Marie were killed in their bedroom and hallway, while Anne was found on the kitchen floor, struck by several close‑range shots.

As police unraveled the family’s strained relationships, attention turned to a bitter dispute over the ownership of Orderud gård. Within weeks, four people were arrested: Per Kristian Orderud, his wife Veronica Orderud, Veronica’s half‑sister Kristin Kirkemo, and Kirkemo’s former boyfriend Lars Grønnerød. Prosecutors argued that all four had helped plan the murders, though no evidence ever identified the actual shooter.

Kirkemo’s role became one of the most debated aspects of the case. She was linked to weapons involved in the investigation and gave testimony that implicated the others, though her statements shifted over time. In 2002, she was convicted of medvirkning til overlagt drap — complicity in premeditated murder — and sentenced to 16 years in prison, a verdict upheld by Norway’s Supreme Court.

Despite the convictions, the case has never fully settled in the public mind. With no one convicted as the shooter and conflicting accounts from those involved, the Orderud murders remain a haunting and controversial chapter in Norwegian criminal history — and Kristin Kirkemo’s name remains inseparable from its enduring mystery.

She has served her time and is moving on with her life.
