Their uncle Frank was a Tool & Die maker in Chicago and took in his nephews in 1939. Frank got Bert a job at the Tool & Die and with his first paycheck got an apartment for him and Don.

In 1976 purchased the former Schultz property with Red wood trees and 8 acres of land and a four hole golf course. The property is one of three parcels which Gregory Peck was interested in buying but the garden was too large for him to manage. Helen, Don's wife suggested to the owners that they should split the land up since it was so large. They did.
Don and Helen also had a home in Hillsborough. An Admiral lived across the street, a very nice man who was in charge of the East Coast Navy. Bing Crosby was also a neighbour, his wife still lives there.
